Fresh Up set 24th April 2009

So yeah... after the Fresh Up Crew got told 'no hip-hop anymore', the crowd kinda thinned out a bit, but that didn't stop me and the other DJs playing some killer funk and soul. It also didn't stop a few cool people from coming down to check it out. Click on the link below to download my best recollection of what I played, recorded in one take and mixed a bit roughly. This one's for you Tash, Elaine and cool uni girl whose name I can't remember. I got a CD for each of you when I see you next, or you can just download it here.

In related news, here's some flicks from the crowd at Tonic Lounge the night after Fresh Up. They got down with the get down. Shots courtesy of the newest staff member at Revolve Records, Erskenville. If you haven't bought records from this store, you haven't bought records!

FRESH UP / TONIC LOUNGE: THIS WEEKEND!

This weekend presents two opportunities to hear the finest funky music in Sydney.

Friday 24th April sees the tried and tested Fresh Up night get funky. Located at the Loft bar @ UTS, the venue is a relaxed mix of pub and club only a stones throw away from central Station. Expect head nodding and booty-shaking funk with plenty of music that will remind you of your favourite hip-hop artists.

Saturday 25th I’m back at Tonic Lounge spinning killer funk, soul and a smattering of obscure disco for the dance floor. Expect to hear things like the rare extended version of Chicago’s ‘Street Player’, the hard funk of Roger and the Gypsies ‘Pass the Hatchet’ (a new Orleans funk bomb produced by Eddie Bo) as well as staple classics from Cameo, James Brown, Brass Construction, Lou Courtney, the Bamboos and many more. Check back here after the date for a new mix from one of these nights. I haven't decided which yet!

Hope to see you there.

Hard Funk @ Tonic Lounge

The following mix is an hour or so of the first set I ever played at Tonic Lounge, way back in October of 2006. It doesn’t seem that long ago that Ben from SWAT Productions introduced me to Gian at a fairly exclusive little record trade night held midweek at Tonic Lounge. There were about a dozen or so DJs, collectors and record-types milling around the couch and table set-up to create some semblance of a record fair. In reality, it looked more like a DJ’s lounge room, which certainly wasn’t a bad thing! It was the first time I’d ever been to the venue, and as soon as I walked in, it seemed like the kind of place I’d really like to play. Most of those present were regulars on either the Friday or Saturday night DJ slots, and I was pretty keen to join the alumni. I did trades or sales with most of the people in the room that evening, and made some friends that I still talk to regularly.

I can’t even remember what mix I gave to Gian to convince him to put me on, but eventually he bucked under the weight of my nagging and gave me the 12:30-3:00am slot. I was so excited. I spent quite a while selecting tracks for this set, so it’s with great pleasure that I present part of the first 2 and a half hours I ever played @ Tonic Lounge.

Frigid @ The Hopetoun

Way back when I first learnt to DJ, I had time to spend on mixes and projects and perfecting everything to make it just the way I wanted it to be. My good friend DJ Buggin', who went on to be a regular at the Frigid Parties @ The Hopetoun, hooked me up with my first gig there in 2002. I was so psyched to play this set, and I probably spent 3 months practicing, fine-tuning and rearranging the tracklist of this mix. The end product hopefully conveys some of that effort, but in all honesty, this was the first complete mix that I ever put together, and my scratching has certainly come a long way since 2002. I did, however, get a lot of good feedback about this mix, and maybe for that reason alone, I've decided to upload it. The vibe is downtempo, dark and moody, and it very much captured the kind of sound I was into at the time: I was consumed by the output of labels like Mo Wax and Ninja Tune, and just starting to discover the back catalogue of the Warp label.

Disco Funk Mix

Hi there. I'm DJ Kinetic, and welcome to my new blog. The idea behind this blog is to present mixes of music I like, and to profile mixes that I have played in clubs or put together for other purposes. I plan to present as wide a variety of music on this blog as I possibly can, within the confines of what I like, that is. Expect funk, soul, disco, jazz, hip-hop, breaks, rarities, and various other things that impress me. The following mix is more of a test than anything else. It's an hour or so of disco-funk from a 3-hour set I prepared for a club in Sydney's Kings Cross called The Tonic Lounge. I played this set at the club on the 24th January 2009, and it went down quite well. It's a bit rough around the edges, but hopefully it's an indicator of the kind of music you'll find me playing in and around Sydney, and a taster of what's to come on this blog.
